When you're connecting external processors, information has to travel between systems, and each connection point is theoretically a vulnerability. That said, the difference is minimal if the external processor is also properly certified. What matters most is choosing platforms that have published security audits and compliance certifications. Never go with a budget platform that doesn't clearly state their security practices. Ask for their PCI DSS compliance documentation. Most legitimate services will happily provide this because they're proud of their security.
